Meet the Teacher

As we near the start of school on August 8th, I would like to invite you to come to my home on 28th for you and your child to meet me.  Please call to schedule a time that will work well for your family. This will give you a chance to have all your questions answered, fill out the paperwork, and pay your first month’s tuition to hold your child’s spot. This will also be a time for me to get to know your child individually. We will talk, read a book, and step aside for a pre-test to see what they already know. They are not expected to know any of the answers at the beginning of the year, but it will give me a better idea of where to start and will help us see how much they have grown at the end of the year. I look forward to meeting with each of you at the end of July and starting school in August!  If you know anyone that may be looking for a preschool please tell them about my preschool and invite them to call or email me.

Curriculum

Our Preschool curriculum is very well rounded! We will enjoy learning academics including math, phonics, and writing basics in many engaging and fun ways. We will play games, make crafts, have calendar time, garden, become very familiar with literature, and learn many school readiness skills like cutting, gluing, and taking turns. We will also learn many new songs and even learn about special values and virtues that enrich our lives. They will do craft projects, skits, free play, and snack.
For math, we will use the Saxon Math curriculum which will give your preschooler a solid foundation in the language and basic concepts for all areas of math. It uses a multi-sensory approach to present new learning in increments and builds upon prior knowledge. We will have calendar time and a lesson time when new concepts are introduced then practiced. Look for and talk about shapes, patterns, and numbers with your child

I am very experienced at teaching phonics so I don't follow one set curriculum to teach reading. I know so many ways to make it fun easy for them to learn to read. We will use games, songs, and more to learn the letters and their sounds. We will be teaching the letters in the order that help them learn to read instead of going from A to Z. We will start with the lowercase vowels then add consonants then before you know it your child will be reading! Point out letters to your child where ever you see them.

For writing we will begin with working on the children's fine motor skills in many different ways to build and strengthen the muscles in the hand necessary to write, then gradually progress to writing letters, their names and more. If your child is learning to write their name at home please encourage them to write it properly, beginning with a capital letter and followed by lower case letters.

I am very passionate about America! I will teach the children about the founding of our country and what makes it so great.  I will use the I Love America curriculum from the National Center for Constitutional Studies and Take Your Hat Off from Brite Music. These are both excellent and teach things that are so important for this rising generation to know! Talk to your child about the heroes from history that you admire and tell them why.

I love children's literature and music so we will enjoy and learn a lot though read stories and singing everyday. We will read classic literature, memorize rhymes, perform skits, and enjoy reading both fiction and nonfiction. I find ways to tie reading and singing into most of what we learn. Please read with your child a total of 20 minutes or more each day. It makes a huge impact on their future and makes them feel special and loved now!

Last but not least is another wonderful curriculum about values and virtues that will enrich their lives. The lessons are taught in a fun and understandable way. The preschoolers will learn about service, friendship, order, families, individuality, curiosity, imagination, obedience, goals, honesty, and communication. Try to point out times when your child or someone they see or know shows great virtue. Talk about the joy it brings to them individually and to those around them.

As you can see I am very passionate about teaching preschoolers. I believe this is the best curriculum around. It teaches what I want my own children to learn and does so in a fun way. You will be amazed by all your children will learn!

Schedule and Tuition

Mrs. Phelps' Preschool will be starting on August 8th for the 2012-2013 school year.
We will meet on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 9:15 - 11:30 at my home in East Mesa near Signal Butte and Elliot in the Mountain Ranch neighborhood. We will follow the Gilbert Public Schools Calendar so mark your clalendars now for all the breaks. We will not change our time on early release days since our class is in the morning already.

We will have a school party once a month.  Most of the parties will be during school day with a few evening parties in hopes that dads and grandparents can come too. Please RSVP to the family parties so I know how many to plan on. We will also have a couple field trips.

For $100 per month your child can join my preschool and all the fun things we have planned for the year. The first month's payment is due upon registration to hold your child's place.  All the following payments will be due on the first school day of each month.

Let me know if you are interested or if you have any questions. I have a few more openings so please help spread the word. I look forward to hearing from you and starting a great year.

My Experience

My love of school began in preschool when I was four and my mom started a preschool for me, my friends, and cousins. I loved learning and having fun with my mom and friends. I fell in love with preschool and have wanted to start my own ever since. I grew up around fabulous teachers and enjoyed helping in their classrooms. As I began my college education, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. I worked as a Kindergarten aide for three years and then as a substitute for a year as I was completing my schooling. I received my Elementary Education degree three months before our first child was born. I have had the privilege of being able to stay home with my kids and having a husband that encourages and supports me in all I do. This past year I taught as part of a Joy School preschool co-op, and then directed my sixth summer performance camp. Now that my children are growing, I am looking forward to putting my degree to use and starting my own preschool. I love teaching and am so excited to do more! I am fulfilling another dream!
